Covid and Cooking
We got Covid and settled into the second month of marriage.
Hello there.
I got the idea of starting a Substack newsletter from Liz’s friend, who lives abroad and sends updates about her life every few weeks or so. With work always being so hectic and there being not much time for meaningful conversations, I thought it would be fun to try the same thing. It would be quite meaningful to track memories as well. Without further ado…
Covid - Yucks.
Yes, I got Covid AGAIN. How is this possible, you ask? Mom says it’s because I don’t get enough sleep but I’m not sure how much of that is based on actual science. My symptoms were so bad that I thought of calling the ambulance a few times. I had a running nose, a hacking cough, searing pain in my throat, a fever, and the worst nausea I have ever experienced in my life (apart from the period of time I had vertigo). I was constantly at the toilet bowl because I needed to puke. I was unable to get up or walk around for about 3-4 days. Get your booster shots guys!
James was very supportive during this period - he plied me with a lot of bread from Breadtalk and Four Seasons (which I have come to realise is a love language on its own). I was mostly too nauseous to eat, but had a weird craving for pomelo (btw James’ family has an uncanny and amazing ability to choose the best pomelos), so he fed me with lots of that too.
With a lot of sleep and a few really helpful colleagues, my symptoms subsided by the 5th day. I was still testing positive but I could at least walk around the house. The cough and nausea lingered for quite a while more though - actually I’m still coughing, sigh. James tested positive on my 4th day - that was the end of his bread runs.
It’s been 10 days since I first tested positive - I was able to go out on the 7th day (with much caution) and it felt like liberation! Perhaps I’m being dramatic, but if you have the link to this substack website, you know me well enough to know that I cannot stay still and I love going outside to play.
If I had to say one good thing about getting Covid - I got to sleep so much. I think it’s been at least 1+ year since I’ve had such good sleep.
Cooking with Nadene??
It’s been a while since I have been excited about cooking, but after recovering from Covid this week I felt like I’d been given a new lease of life and cooked three meals (all dinners) for James and I. The first was my mom’s sole fish, which turned out horribly because I do not have her skills, the second was kimchi stew from Maangchi, and the third was honey soy glazed salmon from Tasty with red peppers/tomato pasta (Mom had taught me how to make her pasta sauce a few weeks back). My food definitely doesn’t look as good as Mom’s, though I think the second and third meal were really not bad. I’m planning to cook butter chicken tomorrow, wish me luck!
Things That I’m Into This Week
Not that anyone really cares, but I thought it’d be fun to share the things that I’ve been into this week:
Betches Podcast - I can’t say that the content is particularly wholesome so listen with caution. Good for listening when you are commuting to work or supermarketing alone.
Morning Brew Newsletter - This is 100% educational and gives a good short summary of the happenings in the United States. Gives basic enough information about what happens on the US stock market as well. Note that it sends to your email though, so if you don’t like spam, it’s probably not a good idea.
Nam Kee Pau’s Red Bean Pau - James bought this while I was sick because I really love red bean pau. Really liked theirs because their filling to pau ratio is amazing (photo taken from the web):
Miss you guys! Hope we can meet soon. Sending love and hugs.
